Introduction

The basic objective of Dairy Development is to provide forward and backward linkages to the dairy farmers so that economic upliftment of the dairy farmers is achieved particularly for the poor and the needy ones.

Our Mandate

Here is a concise, point-wise summary of the mandate and key initiatives of dairy development in Lakhimpur district.

   1. Economic Upliftment of Dairy Farmers: The primary objective is to enhance the livelihoods of rural dairy farmers, especially the poor, by providing forward and backward linkages in the dairy sector.

   2. Formation of Dairy Cooperatives: Establishment of Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCS) and a Dairy Federation to unite dairy farmers, facilitating collective milk marketing and access to financial assistance.

  3. Cluster-Based Dairy Villages: Identification and development of potential dairy areas on a cluster basis, such as Pathalipahar and Bhogpur, to increase milk production and farmer participation.

   5. Capacity Building and Exposure Visits: Organization of training programs and exposure visits for dairy farmers to successful dairy cooperatives, enhancing their knowledge and practices.

    6. Milk Collection and Distribution: Establishment of milk collection centres and distribution networks, including sale points in North Lakhimpur township, to streamline milk procurement and sales.

    7. Product Diversification: Initiatives to produce value-added dairy products like cream, ghee, and curd, expanding market opportunities for dairy farmers.

     8. Support for Informal Milk Sector: Under the Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project (APART), efforts are made to formalize the informal dairy value chain by improving production, quality, and market access.

These initiatives collectively aim to transform the dairy sector in Lakhimpur district, promoting sustainable development and improved livelihoods for dairy farmers.

Key Programme and Schemes

  1. To support sustainability, seed money was provided to three selected Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCSs) formed under various schemes. This assistance aims to strengthen milk production, procurement, quality control, and capacity building. The DCSs will also be linked to other schemes for forward and backward integration. The Government of Assam is supporting these efforts by funding essential items like milk analyzers, cans, and working capital to help expand their milk business systematically.

  2. In order to enhance milk production and organized milk marketing in the state, the scheme titled “Providing Rs. 5 Subsidy per Liter of Milk to Eligible Farmers Who Sell Through Dairy Co-operative Societies” was announced by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam during the inauguration of the National Farming Conclave held in Guwahati on May 18, 2023. The scheme aims to provide a Rs. 5 subsidy per liter of milk to farmers who sell their milk through co-operative societies, thereby supporting their sustainability in milk production and procurement, and promoting organized milk marketing in the state.
