INTRODUCTION

Lakhimpur district is one of the major silk producing districts of Assam. The congenial climatic condition and suitable soil texture bestow it an optimum biosphere enriched with several species of host food plants for different seri- genesis insects like Eri (Samia richini), Muga (Antheraea assamensis) and Mulberry (Bombyx mori) which are conventionally reared up in the district since time immemorial. Among these three Eri is extensively practiced followed by Muga and Mulberry.

 

Rearing of Silks worms and its exploitation for elegant fabrication isone of the salient features of enriched agro and cultural heritage of the district. For this reason sericulture is considered as the most prominent and most common livelihood of it, next to Agriculture. It contributes 25% to 30% of total domestic production of Assam ,as far Silkis concerned. Large scale production of fabulous golden yellow Muga Cocoon and yarn, creamy white Eri Cocoon and yarn and Silvery Mulberry Silk yarn (Keccha Pat) is now becoming an identity of the District.

 

The Lakhimpur District has 906 Nos Sericulture Villages with  16242 numbers of sericulture farmers in Eri, Muga and Mulberry Sector as below-

 

  1. Muga Farmers– 6789 Nos.

  2. Eri Farmers– 6680 Nos

  3. Mulberry Farmers– 2773 Nos

 

The Plantation Area of the district covered by Sericulture host plant comprising Som Plantation (Muga Host Plant) Kesseru Plantation (Eri Host Plant) and Mulberry Plantation (Mulberry Host Plant)  is 2170.18 Hectors including both Govt. and private sector.


OUR HISTORY

The Office of Assistant Director of Sericulture,Lakhimpur a district wing of Directorate of Sericulture (DOS), under the Administrative control of Handloom Textiles & Sericulture Department, Government of Assam was established in the year of 1981.

Since separation of the Directorate of Sericulture, it has been performing as a as district head office for all activities relating to Silk & Silk Production in the district. The Headquarter of the Assistant Directorate of Sericulture, Lakhimpur is located at Japisajia just a 3 KM distance from the district administrative headquarter North Lakhimpur. This office is headed by Assistant Director of Sericulture, Grade-I Officer with 1 Nos. of Sub-Divisional Office, 1 No Sericulture Research Station , 19 Nos. of Farms/ Centres/Reeling & Spinning units and 26 Sericulture Circles.

OUR MANDATE

Vision:

 

The vision is to build a sustainable, inclusive, and globally competitive sericulture industry that strengthens rural livelihoods while preserving cultural heritage. It emphasizes environmentally responsible practices alongside farmer empowerment through better income opportunities, skills, and support systems. A strong focus is placed on quality improvement and continuous innovation, supported by effective technology integration to enhance productivity and efficiency. Ultimately, the aim is to position the sector as a competitive contributor to the economy, balancing tradition with modern advancements to ensure long-term growth and resilience.

 

Mission:

 

  1. To promote Eri,Muga and Mulberry Silk as an important brand.

    1. To transform the rural economy of the district by facilitating emergence ofa vibrant silk Industry through application of Technology, Motivation and Training.


Key Programme and Schemes

A. Programmes-

  1. Providing Silkworm seed (DFLS) to seri farmers in subsidized rates.
  2. Provision for providing Som plantation to Pvt. Muga rearers for conducting of commercial Muga silkworm broods.

  3. Reeling facilities available for production of quality silk/yarn of Eri and Mulberry.

  4. Providing all round technical assistant for conducting commercial rearing of Eri/Muga/Mulberry silkworms

  5. Conducting awareness and training camp for skill up gradation of Seri farmers.

  6. Provision of disease monitoring through circle demonstrators during commercial rearing of Eri/Muga Mulberry silkworm.

  7. Procuring of Eri & Muga cocoons @ Govt. floor price through cocoon bank.

    B. Schemes-

    1. Providing Rearing/ Appliances to 82 Nos. Women Seri Farmers (Gender Budget) Office of the Directorate of Sericulture, Assam under SOPD-G for the year 2025-26.

    2. Supply of rearing equipment, disinfectant and prophylactic measure to Assistance to Existing Muga Seed Rearers of the project – Augmentation of Muga Silk Production through Muga farmers of Kamrup and Lakhimpur (Dhakuakhana) District of Assam under CS scheme for the year 2024-25.

    3. Supply of articles for existing Muga Pvt. Grainures of the project – Augmentation of Muga Silk Production through Muga farmers of Kamrup and Lakhimpur (Dhakuakhana) District of Assam under CS scheme for the year 2024-25.

    4. Supply of rearing equipment, disinfectant and prophylactic measure to Assistance to Existing Commercial Muga Rearers of the project – Augmentation of Muga Silk Production through Muga farmers of Kamrup and Lakhimpur (Dhakuakhana) District of Assam under CS scheme for 2nd Year.

ACHIEVEMENTS

     Achievements during the last 3 financial years:

  1. Silk Production (Eri/Muga/Mulberry):

        Significant growth in overall silk production, reflecting   improved productivity,    

        better disease management, and   adoption of modern rearing techniques.

2. Increase in Plantation Area:

       Expansion of host plant cultivation area, ensuring a stronger raw   silkworm food   

         plant  base and  supporting higher cocoon and silk output.
