Introduction

Lakhimpur district in Assam is endowed with abundant natural resources including fertile land and water bodies, making it suitable for fisheries & aquaculture practices. The district has huge resources of freshwater fisheries like ponds & tanks, beels, paddy fields & swamps, forest fisheries etc., which can be leveraged to improve food security, generate employment and boost the economy of the local people.

Our Mandate

            To increase fish and quality fish seed production, identify & promote research & studies on fisheries & allied areas, promote scientific fish farming, provide extension services to fish farmers, fishermen & fishery entrepreneurs with a vision to achieve self-sufficiency in fish production through sustainable fisheries management practices.

Future Plan

            By introducing Best Management Practices (BMP) for sustainable fish production, strengthening awareness, and building the capacity of traditional fish farmers are few initiatives for a foundation for transformative change in fisheries sector in Lakhimpur district. The department also aims to empower unemployed rural youth by creating viable livelihood opportunities in aquaculture. Through these strategic efforts, the district envisions a significant rise in fish production per unit area, an increase in farmers’ annual income, and enhanced food security for local communities. This holistic approach holds the potential to revitalize the fisheries sector, ushering in a true Matsya Kranti—a Blue Revolution—in Lakhimpur district.
